Governor dissolves West Bengal Assembly as Mamata refuses to resign

Mamata Banjeree maintains that her party has not morally lost the elections

West Bengal governor has dissolved the State Assembly after Mamata Banerjee refused to resign following the crushing electoral defeat TMC suffered in the 2026 Assembly Elections. BJP won a total of 107 seats while the TMC has been reduced to 80.

Mamata has refused to accept the verdict, citing irregularities in the Election process and terming the Election Commissioner as the 'Villain of the Century'.

However, the State's Assembly was due to expire today. Raj Bhavan released a notification issued a day earlier invoking Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution to formally dissolve the Assembly with effect from May 7, 2026.

“In exercise of the power conferred on me by sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I hereby dissolve the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal with effect from 07th of May 2026,” the order stated.

“I have not lost, so I will not go to Raj Bhavan. I will not tender resignation,” Banerjee had told reporters earlier this week. The Trinamool Congress defended Banerjee’s decision as a symolic protest against alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

This is the first time that the BJP will be forming a government in Bengal. Suvendhu Adhikari, who won the Bhabanipur seat defeating Mamata by a margin of over 15,000 votes, is one of the front-runners for the CM post.
